Who wrote this, and why that matters
This shortlist is published by Shorty, and Shorty is one of the tools in it. Treat it as a vendor round-up, because that is what it is. We have tried to earn the read anyway: every competitor description comes from that product’s own documentation, we name the jobs where another tool is the better answer, and we say plainly where Shorty is the wrong choice. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements.
We are not claiming an independent benchmark. What follows is a map of which product is built for which starting point, which is the thing that actually decides the answer.
VEED vs Kapwing, and why people look past both
VEED and Kapwing cover similar ground: browser editing, subtitles, translation, generation and team workspaces. VEED leans toward an all-in-one studio with recording and transcript editing; Kapwing leans toward collaboration, and its Kai assistant can plan a storyboard and assemble a video before you refine it in Studio.
People look past both when the timeline itself is the bottleneck: the hours go into choosing shots and cutting them, not into finding features. That is the part Shorty takes over.
The shortlist at a glance
All of these run in a browser or on the web; the difference is who makes the edit.
| Tool | Who makes the edit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Shorty | Shorty, from your brief or reference video | Finished edits from your clips without timeline work |
| Kapwing | You, with Kai assembling drafts | Teams editing, reviewing and translating together |
| CapCut | You, with templates and AI tools | Templates, effects and hands-on control |
| Canva | Magic Video drafts, then you | Video inside a design and brand workspace |
| Microsoft Clipchamp | You, with AI auto-compose | A simple free editor for Windows and Microsoft 365 |
| Descript | You, by editing the transcript | Speech-led edits with an AI co-editor |
| Adobe Express | You, from templates | Quick branded video alongside graphics |
1. Shorty — when you want the edit done, not a better timeline
Shorty runs in the browser like VEED, but there is no timeline to operate. Upload clips or photos, write a brief or add a reference video, and it plans the shots, order, pacing, captions, framing and colour, then renders one MP4. It stabilizes shaky clips without being asked and can clean up noisy voices and even out loudness.
Team and Scale workspaces share credits across a team, and several briefs can start at once.
Where Shorty is the wrong choice: if you need exact frame trims, masks, keyframes or layered audio work, Shorty will frustrate you — its browser timeline is for reviewing and inspecting the rendered cut, not for authoring it. It also edits footage you supply; it does not generate scenes you never shot. If you have no footage at all, you want a generator, not this.
Pricing: Creator US$19, Pro US$49, Studio US$99 or Max US$199 per month; annual billing is discounted by 30% across all paid plans. Paid plans include monthly credits for analysis and rendering (4,400 on Creator), an edit uses about 594 credits on Auto, the default director (Shorty Nitro since 28 October 2026), or about 100 with GPT 6 Luna (about 7 or 44 edits a month on Creator), and the actual cost of an edit varies with the footage processed.
2. Kapwing — for teams editing together
Kapwing combines Kai-assisted project creation with a collaborative browser timeline: Kai plans a storyboard and assembles a video, and you refine it in Studio with subtitles, translation and repurposing tools.
3. CapCut — for templates and hands-on control
CapCut’s web, desktop and mobile editors share a large template, effect and caption library, with keyframes when you want exact control.
4. Canva — for design-led video
Canva’s Magic Video cuts uploaded clips from a prompt, and the rest of Canva handles brand assets, thumbnails and posts.
5. Microsoft Clipchamp — for a simple free editor
Clipchamp is an easy default on Windows and Microsoft 365, with screen and camera recording, stock and AI auto-compose.
6. Descript — if transcript editing is what you used most
If VEED’s transcript editing was the reason you chose it, Descript goes deeper: you change the video by changing its transcript, with Underlord acting on instructions.
7. Adobe Express — for quick branded content
Adobe Express fits when video is one item in a campaign next to images, flyers and posts, with Adobe Stock assets.

How to switch from VEED to Shorty
Switching takes one project, not a migration weekend. VEED projects, timelines and templates do not import into Shorty, so you bring across two things: your raw footage and the look of an edit you already like.
- Export one finished VEED video you like as an MP4. Upload it to Shorty as the reference video (MP4, MOV or WebM up to 256 MB) and name the traits to keep: pacing, shot length, transitions, captions or colour. Shorty builds the new cut from your footage, not the reference’s frames.
- Bring the raw clips and photos, not the VEED project. Upload them from your device, drop a whole folder (subfolders included), or add videos from a shared Google Drive folder or Dropbox.
- Write the brief the way you would brief an editor: length, format (9:16, 4:5, 1:1, 16:9 and more), what happens first, the caption words and the ending. The table below translates the VEED habits that matter.
- Review the rendered first cut. Ask for changes in the revision chat, or click an editable title or graphic and describe the change.
- Keep the look for next time. Uploaded references are saved to your account, and up to ten images or videos can become a reusable style for later edits.
What you did in VEED, and what you write in Shorty
Shorty has no timeline to operate, so each habit becomes a line in the brief or a revision request. Where Shorty has no equivalent, the table says so.
| If you used VEED to… | In Shorty… |
|---|---|
| Record your webcam or screen | Shorty does not record. Record in your usual tool and upload the file. |
| Add auto subtitles | Captions are planned with the edit. Write the exact words where they matter; download them as SRT or VTT. |
| Translate or dub | Keep VEED or another translation tool for that step. |
| Clean audio | Shorty cleans up noisy voices and evens out loudness as part of the edit. |
| Apply a brand kit | Name your colours and caption style in the brief, or save a reusable style from up to ten of your brand images or videos. |
| Trim and arrange clips on the timeline | Describe the order and length; Shorty’s timeline is for review, not manual trims. |
| Review with your team | Share an edit by link, and use a Team or Scale workspace for shared credits. |
What does not carry over from VEED
Projects, brand kits, subtitle files inside projects and seats stay in VEED. If you still need recording, translation or manual cleanup, keep VEED for those steps and bring the finished Shorty MP4 into it.
Music needs one check. If the edit you use as a reference has a soundtrack, Shorty may carry it into the render, and a track licensed inside VEED’s library is not automatically licensed elsewhere. Ask Shorty for a different track, or attach a song you have the rights to.
Your first Shorty brief after VEED
Open it in Shorty with the brief already written, add your clips and the reference video, then change the details to fit your project.
Turn my clips into a 30-second vertical video for social. Pick the strongest shots, keep the order of events, and match the pacing and caption style of the attached reference. Clean captions with my exact words where I give them, clean up the voice and even out the loudness. Make a 16:9 version from the same edit too.
