Do you need an AI video editor or a long-video clipper?

Use a clipper when you want several highlights from one long recording. Use an editor like Shorty when you want a new video assembled from source clips around a brief or reference. The right choice starts with the shape of your footage.

An event can need both

An event montage combines the venue, people, demonstrations and reactions into a new story. A speaker highlight extracts an idea from a longer talk. Keep those deliverables separate in the brief so you can evaluate each tool against the job it is meant to do.

What to check in the output

For a montage, review whether the selected shots prove the intended message. For an excerpt, check the sentences before and after the cut to ensure it preserves context. In either case, check captions, framing and audio before publishing.

When a transcript editor is the next option

If you already know exactly which sentences should remain and want to edit the speech through text, a transcript-led workflow such as Descript is another useful category. It sits between selecting highlights automatically and building a visual sequence from many clips.

How we chose these tools

This shortlist is published by Shorty. We compare the starting material, the main editing job and the control needed after the first output. Official product documentation supports the feature descriptions; the fit recommendations are our editorial judgement. This is not a timed hands-on benchmark or a ranked list of every editor. There are no affiliate links or paid placements. Check current plans before buying.

Questions, answered.

Can one project use both workflows?

Yes. For example, create a visual event recap from camera clips and separate speaker highlights from a full talk. Review each deliverable against its own brief.
