Reference Match 2.0, Talking Heads and Sony S-Log Grading

The launch film. The before-and-afters are real edits from our tests; the reel in the feed is one of our own edits, standing in for a video you love.

Shorty learned to copy your favourite videos a while ago. Today it got a lot pickier about the details:

  • Reference Match 2.0: Your edit now matches the details of the video you love.
    • Captions placed and highlighted like your reference.
    • Cuts as quick as your reference, locked to the beat in music edits.
    • Ask for one to one, and the opening and titles are rebuilt with your clips.
  • Talking Heads: Raw takes in, ready to post out.
    • The speaker stays in the centre, eyes level from cut to cut.
    • Reading from a phone or an empty shot under the voice gets covered.
    • The script stays whole, in the order it was said.
  • Sony S-Log Grading: Flat Log footage starts from natural colour.
    • Converted with Sony’s own colour transform before editing.
    • Nothing to switch on.
  • And more: Readable captions, text clear of the Reels buttons, steady tripod shots and smoother revisions.

Reference Match 2.0

Reference Match has always let you add a video you like and get your footage edited in its style. Version 2.0 stops squinting at the reference and starts reading the fine print: where the captions sit and which words light up, how fast it cuts, and where every cut lands in the music.

Ask it to recreate the reference one to one, and Shorty rebuilds the opening and the titles with your own clips. Because nothing says “I love this reel” like copying its captions right down to the yellow.

Spot-on captions. Four raw takes of a generated speaker and a reference reel: glowing captions with the main words highlighted, on time with every word and kept off the face, as the brief and its reference asked. The fluffed line is gone, too.
1:1 recreation. Asked to recreate a travel reel’s opening: 1.0 made a single LOCATION line; 2.0 rebuilt the reference’s three-line title.
Matched pace. A perfume ad from our tests, cut as quickly as the fast-cut reference it was given.

Beat-Locked Cuts

In edits cut to music, Shorty now checks every cut against the beat and moves the ones that miss before you see the video. Here are four takes straight from the camera, and the music video Shorty cut from them. Turn the sound on.

Four takes in, one music video outMake a music video from these 4 takes, around 20 sec, horizontal… cut between the takes on the beat.Top: the four takes as they came off the camera, flat S-Log and all. Bottom: the edit, switching between them on the beat, graded, with the black-and-white moments and flicker the request asked for.

How to Use Reference Match 2.0?

Easy! Add your footage, add the video you love under References, and write what you want in the brief: “like the reference”, or “recreate it one to one” when you want it copied closely.

Your words still win. If the brief says “key words in yellow” or “no music”, Shorty follows you over the reference. It also finally understands “no”: “no slow motion” and “don’t repeat clips” mean exactly that.

Talking Heads

Raw takes in, ready to post out. When your footage is someone talking to the camera, Shorty now keeps them in the centre of every shot, with their eyes at the same height from cut to cut, so the head never jumps.

Everyone reads from their phone sometimes, and every camera has pointed at an empty room at least once. Shorty now spots both and covers them with B-roll that fits the words, or with a full-screen graphic when nothing does. And the script stays whole: every line of the best take, in order.

How to Get It?

Nothing to set up. Upload your talking-head takes and describe the video. If you want the footage left framed as shot, just say so in the brief.

Talking Heads: raw takes of a generated speaker next to Shorty’s edit of them. Reading from a phone, walking out of the shot mid-sentence, and an off-centre speaker.

Sony S-Log Grading

Log footage comes out of the camera looking flat and grey, because it’s meant to be graded. That’s great for colourists and confusing for everyone else.

Shorty now reads the camera’s own metadata and converts S-Log3 footage with Sony’s official colour transform before it edits, so your video starts from natural colour, with real blacks and contrast.

How to Use It?

Upload your S-Log3 clips straight from the camera. That’s it.

And More

Readable captions

Text that would be too small to read is fixed before you see the edit.

Clear of the buttons

Titles and captions stay inside the area Instagram Reels leaves free.

Tripod shots stay still

Shorty no longer “stabilizes” a camera that never moved.

No surprise freeze frames

Shorty doesn’t hold a frame still unless you or your reference asked for it.

Every clip gets a turn

Shorty uses all the clips you gave it before it shows one twice.

Event recaps

A recap of an event now cuts fast to the music, with short soundbites in between.

Music that makes room

Music dips under voices and comes back up between them, and fades out instead of stopping dead.

One word at a time

One-word captions show exactly one word, with no flash of the next one.

Smoother revisions

Revisions of edits with stabilized or slow-motion shots no longer get stuck.

Uploads that recover

A big upload rides out a brief network hiccup instead of failing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s new in Reference Match 2.0?

It matches the details of your reference: where the captions sit and which words are highlighted, how fast the edit cuts, and, in music edits, that every cut lands on the beat. Ask for a one-to-one recreation and it rebuilds the reference’s opening and titles with your clips.

How do I make my video look like a reel I like?

In Shorty, add your footage and the reel under References, and write “like the reference” in your brief. Anything you write, like “key words in yellow”, wins over the reference.

Does Shorty keep the speaker centred in talking-head videos?

Yes. Shorty centres the speaker in every talking shot, keeps the eyes at the same height from cut to cut, and covers the moments they read from their phone with B-roll or a graphic. If you want the footage framed as shot, say so in your brief.

Does Shorty work with Sony S-Log3 footage?

Yes. Shorty converts S-Log3 footage with Sony’s official colour transform before editing, so it starts from natural colour.

Your reference in. Your edit, cut just like it, out. Now go make something.
