A reference video is a great way to show Shorty what you want. Now it’s optional: write a brief, and Shorty edits your footage from your words alone. When you do bring a reference, your edit comes out in the shape it was actually shot in, with captions set in real typefaces.
Edit From a Brief Alone
Add your clips, skip the reference and describe the edit: the pace, the captions, the mood, the length. Shorty reads your brief, studies your footage and builds the cut from both.
Your words set the frame too. Write “square” or “horizontal”, or a length like “30 seconds”, and Shorty starts from it.
The Shape Your Reference Was Shot In
Shorty used to sort every reference into a handful of shapes, so a 4:3 clip could come back widescreen and a 4:5 one as a full vertical. Now your edit is delivered in the shape the reference was actually shot in: 9:16, 4:5, 3:4, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or 21:9.
Many references are screen recordings, with the video sitting inside an app. Shorty now measures where the video sits in the frame and matches that, not the recording around it.
A Real Font Library
Captions and titles are now set from a curated library of typefaces picked for short-form video: condensed headline faces, editorial serifs, clean geometric sans, monospace and handwriting. Many of them cover Cyrillic, so a brief in Russian keeps its style.
Shorty only reaches for faces it actually has, so the typeface it chooses is the one you get in the final video.

Your edits, as a wall of cuts
The Edits page now shows the edits themselves. Each one is a tile of its own cut, with its status in the corner and a progress bar while it’s still rendering.
Steadier renders
Edits now finish more reliably when many are running at the same time.
Good to know
Do I still need a reference video?
No. A reference is the quickest way to show a style, but a written brief works on its own. You still add your own footage.
Which shapes can an edit come out in?
9:16, 4:5, 3:4, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 and 21:9. With a reference, Shorty matches the shape it was shot in.
Describe the edit you have in mind, and let your footage do the rest.
