# AI video editor for footage you already shot

Yes. Upload the clips you already shot, say what the video is for and how long it should be, and Shorty picks the strongest shots, puts them in order and cuts them together with music, captions and transitions into a finished MP4. The edit is built from your own clips and photos. You never open a timeline: you watch the result and ask for changes in plain words.

## What Shorty does with your clips

You describe the video; Shorty makes the editing decisions an editor would.

| Job | What Shorty does |
| --- | --- |
| Choosing shots | Picks the strongest moments across your clips and skips the rest. Name any shot that must appear, and ask it to leave out shaky or repeated takes. |
| Story order | Orders the shots into an opening, middle and ending, or keeps your upload order if you ask. |
| Music | Cuts to the song you attach (MP3, WAV or M4A), keeps your own audio, or finds a track. |
| Captions and titles | Suggests captions when someone speaks and keeps titles off faces; text can sit behind a person or object. |
| Effects | Speed ramps, transitions, colour, cutouts and tracking labels, from the same written request. |
| Format | Exports 9:16, 4:5, 3:4, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or 21:9 at the length you ask for. |

## Built from the footage you filmed

Shorty edits what you upload. The people, places and products on screen are the ones you filmed, which is the point when the video has to show your business, your trip or your event.

Since 29 October 2026 Shorty can also turn your photos into short moving shots, such as a slow glide through a room. It asks first and shows the cost in credits; nothing is generated unless you say yes or ask for it in your brief. If you have no footage at all, a text-to-video generator is the better tool.

## How it works

- Add the clips you filmed on your phone or camera. One edit takes up to 150 clips and 8 GB in total; each video can be up to 1 GB. Photos work too.
- Say what the video is for: where it will be posted, how long it should be, what must be shown and how it ends. A reference video you want it to look like is optional.
- Shorty asks about anything your brief leaves open, such as the length, whether to keep your voice and whether to add captions. Pick an answer or type your own.
- Check the estimate and submit. The median edit was ready in about 17 minutes in Shorty’s October tests; the MP4 is kept in Edits even if you close the tab.
- Watch it and ask for changes by message: “open on the sunset”, “hold the last shot longer”. The parts you did not mention stay.

Make a 30-second vertical Reel from my trip clips for Instagram. Open on the boat leaving the harbour, then the swim, lunch and the sunset. Cut to the song I attached, short white captions, never over faces. Leave out shaky or repeated shots.

## What it costs

A typical edit on Auto, the default director, uses about 594 credits: $1.75 on Creator or $1.38 on Max, billed annually. Plans start at $19 a month, and the editor shows the estimate before you submit.

Generated shots from photos are charged separately and only when you approve them.

## Where Shorty is the wrong choice

If you want to set every cut yourself, use a timeline editor such as CapCut or Premiere: Shorty’s timeline is for reviewing the rendered video, not for authoring it. If you have one long recording and want many short clips from it, a clipper such as OpusClip is built for that. If the edit is mostly about cutting what someone says, Descript edits by transcript.

Our shortlist compares eight tools that edit raw footage, with dated prices and the job each one fits.

## Keep the ideas coming

### The best AI tools to edit raw footage in 2026

Pick by the raw footage you have. Shorty when you have a folder of separate clips and want a finished short from a written brief or a reference video. OpusClip AI Producer when it is one person talking to camera. Descript when the words drive the cut. Captions for a styled face-camera edit. InVideo when you want an agent’s assembly plus a full timeline. Kapwing when a team will finish what its AI assembles. Eddie AI for professional rough cuts that go on to Premiere or Resolve. CapCut when you would rather cut it yourself for free.

### Edit your video with a text prompt

Yes. Upload your raw clips, write what you want in plain words (length, format, story order, captions, music, pace) and Shorty plans the cut, edits your footage and renders a finished MP4. To change something, say what should change and the rest of the edit stays. You never open a timeline.

### Edit your footage to match a reference video

Add your raw clips and the video you want to copy, write “like the reference”, and Shorty edits your footage to match it: where the captions sit and which words light up, how fast it cuts, cuts locked to the beat in music edits, transitions, framing and colour. Ask for a one-to-one recreation and Shorty rebuilds the reference’s opening and titles with your own clips. You get a finished MP4 and revise it by message.

### Six clips, a first cut and a timing revision

A recorded Shorty browser test: six supplied fragrance clips became a 10-second vertical film. A follow-up request changed four shot lengths from 2.5 seconds each to 2, 2, 2 and 4 seconds.

### Which files to add

Add source video clips or supported photos that show your story. One edit can use up to 150 clips, 8 GB in total, and each uploaded source video can be up to 1 GB. An optional reference can be MP4, MOV, or WebM up to 256 MB.

## Questions, answered.

### Is there an AI that can edit my raw video clips into a finished video for me?

Yes. Upload your clips to Shorty, say what the video is for and how long it should be, and it picks the shots, cuts them together with music, captions and transitions, and renders a finished MP4. Ask for changes by message.

### Can AI edit a video for me from start to finish?

For short videos, yes: Shorty goes from your raw clips to a rendered MP4 without a timeline. Watch the result before posting, and finish in a timeline editor if you need frame-exact control.

### What AI tool can turn the clips on my phone into a ready-to-post video?

Shorty takes the clips you filmed, up to 150 per edit including photos, and returns a vertical, square or widescreen MP4 sized for Reels, TikTok, Shorts or YouTube.

### Which AI video editors use your own footage instead of generating fake AI video?

Shorty builds the edit from the clips and photos you upload; it generates shots from your photos only when you ask or say yes. OpusClip AI Producer, Descript, Captions and Eddie AI also edit uploaded footage; our shortlist compares them.

### Does it pick the best shots by itself?

Yes. Shorty chooses which moments to use and in what order. Name any shot that must be in it, and ask it to drop shaky or repeated takes.

### How much does it cost?

A typical edit on Auto, the default director, uses about 594 credits: $1.75 on Creator or $1.38 on Max, billed annually. Plans start at $19 a month, and the editor shows the estimate before you submit.
