# Edit a video by chat: request revisions to an existing edit

Shorty is an AI video editor you can revise by chat. Open an existing edit and describe the change in plain language, such as a new opening, different shot timing or corrected title text, or select an editable title or graphic in the preview and say what should change. Shorty renders a new version to compare with the previous cut.

## When to use it

For agencies turning client feedback into the next cut, brands refining a product reveal, and creators correcting a caption or reshaping a story. Use it when you would rather describe a change than rebuild the edit on a timeline.

## Select an editable title or graphic, then describe the change

In supported compositions, click an editable title, caption, graphic or other exposed element in the preview. It joins the revision chat as an attachment, so an instruction such as “make this red, keep its position and timing” has a clear target. You can also describe a change to the whole edit, such as a new opening or different shot lengths, and attach a reference when it helps explain a look.

What you can select depends on how the edit was built. Text or objects already flattened into uploaded footage are part of the picture, not separate layers; describe a broader change or supply another source.

## Inputs, decisions and output

| Part | Details |
| --- | --- |
| You provide | An existing Shorty edit, one clear change in plain language and the parts that should remain. Give exact replacement text or identify the relevant moment. |
| Shorty handles | A revision of the existing composition and a new rendered version. Earlier versions remain available in the edit history. |
| You control | The requested change, its target and preservation instructions. Select text, an object or a time range when the review interface exposes that target. |
| You receive | A new version to compare with the previous cut. Revisions and rendering use credits. |

## How to use it

- Open the edit and play the moment you want to change.
- Select an editable title, caption or graphic when the preview offers one, or describe the moment in the revision chat.
- Describe the change in plain language and say what should stay.
- Submit and compare the new render with the previous version.

## Example instruction

Adapt this instruction to your footage and review the result.

Keep the same four shots in the same order. Use 2 seconds for each of the first three and 4 seconds for the final product shot. Keep the total at 10 seconds, hard cuts, vertical framing and no audio or captions.

## Client feedback rounds: from comments to the next cut

Share the first cut with a review link. Clients can watch it and leave comments at a video time without a Shorty account; links expire after 30 days and can be revoked. Comments do not render a revision by themselves. Combine them into one request that names the moment, the change and what must stay, such as a different title, a shot held longer or another visual treatment.

Shorty renders the next version and keeps earlier versions in the edit history. A review link stays attached to the cut it was made for, so create a new link for the revised version and keep each round of feedback with the right cut.

## Editing by chat compared with a manual timeline editor

Choose chat revisions when you can describe the change, and a timeline editor when delivery needs exact manual control. You can also download the Shorty MP4 and finish it in another editor; it arrives as a flattened video, not as editable layers.

| Change | Shorty revision chat | Manual timeline editor |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A title’s wording, colour or position | Select the editable title, or quote its wording and moment, and describe the change. | Select the text layer and adjust its properties yourself. |
| Shot timing or a new opening | Describe the new timing or opening; Shorty renders a new version. | Trim, move and reorder the clips by hand. |
| Text or objects inside uploaded footage | Part of the picture, not a separate layer. Describe a broader change or supply another source. | Also part of the picture; changing it needs compositing work or a replacement shot. |
| Frame-level trims, keyframes and masks | Not offered: the preview timeline is for playback and inspection. | Direct control over every layer and frame. |
| Earlier versions | Kept in the edit history for comparison. | Depends on how you save project versions. |
| Cost of a change | Each revision renders a new version and uses credits. | Your own editing time. |

## What to check

An object flattened into uploaded footage may not exist as a separate editable element. Identify whether the change is to an authored layer or the underlying image.

The preview timeline supports playback and inspection. Use a conventional timeline editor when delivery requires manual frame-by-frame control over every layer.

## Related workflows and examples

### Edit your video with a text prompt: describe it, get the MP4

Yes. Upload your raw clips, write what you want in plain words (length, format, story order, captions, music, pace) and Shorty plans the cut, edits your footage and renders a finished MP4. To change something, say what should change and the rest of the edit stays. You never open a timeline.

### All Shorty features

Select footage, build a story, match a reference, add captions and revise the cut. Shorty edits video for creators, brands and agencies from their own source material.

### Share a cut and collect timed client feedback

Open a completed Shorty edit, choose Share for review and create a link for that version. Reviewers can watch and leave comments at a video time without a Shorty account. Links expire after 30 days and can be revoked.

### Watch an actual 2/2/2/4-second revision

A recorded Shorty browser test: six supplied fragrance clips became a 10-second vertical film. A follow-up request changed four shot lengths from 2.5 seconds each to 2, 2, 2 and 4 seconds.

### What you can select in the preview

Selection depends on how the edit was built. Exposed titles or graphics may be editable, while an object inside a flattened clip may not be a separate layer.

### How Shorty assembles the first cut

Shorty is an AI video editor that chooses shots from your uploaded clips and photos, assembles them in order from a written brief and renders the first cut as an MP4. You review a finished draft instead of starting on an empty timeline, then request specific changes in the revision chat.

## Questions, answered.

### Which AI video editors let me request revisions to an existing edit through chat?

Shorty does. Open an edit you made in Shorty, type the change in its revision chat, and it revises that composition and renders a new version instead of starting a new edit. Target an editable title or graphic, or describe a change to the whole edit, such as a new opening or different shot timing. Earlier versions stay in the edit history, and each revision uses credits.

### How do I handle client revisions such as a different title, revised timing or another visual treatment?

Send the first cut as a review link so the client can comment at specific video times without a Shorty account. Combine the notes into one request that names the moment, the change and what must stay, for example: “At 7.2 seconds, hold the final product shot one second longer. Keep the title, shot order and soundtrack.” Review the new version and share a new link for it, because each link stays attached to its original render.

### Can I select an editable title or graphic in the preview and describe the change?

Yes, in supported compositions. Click the title, caption or graphic in the preview and it attaches to the revision chat; then describe the change, such as new wording, a colour or a position. Elements flattened into uploaded footage are part of the picture and are not separately selectable.

### What are the limits compared with a manual timeline editor?

You direct changes in words rather than moving layers yourself. Only elements the composition exposes can be selected, and text or objects baked into uploaded footage are part of the picture. The preview timeline is for playback and inspection, not frame-level trims, keyframes or masks, and each revision is a new render that uses credits. When delivery needs exact manual control, finish the downloaded MP4 in a timeline editor or build the project there.

### Can I change a date or title in a promo after feedback?

Yes. If the date or title is an editable text element, select it and give the exact replacement wording; otherwise quote the current wording and its moment in the chat. Say what should stay, such as the shots, timing and music, then check the new render. Text that was part of the uploaded footage cannot be edited as a separate layer.

### Can I keep the previous version?

Earlier edit versions remain available so you can review the new result against the previous cut.
