# Animated captions: fonts, placement and timing

Shorty can add speech captions while assembling the video. Specify a font and visual treatment, then request wording, position or timing changes in the revision chat.

## When to use it

For creators making spoken Reels, brands showing a narrated demonstration, and agencies applying readable captions to client videos.

## Inputs, decisions and output

| Part | Details |
| --- | --- |
| You provide | Footage with intelligible speech, correct spellings for names and terminology, and your preferred caption treatment. |
| Shorty handles | Speech-caption preparation and rendered caption styling as part of the edit. Supported compositions can expose caption elements for targeted revision. |
| You control | A catalogue of 80 font families, including Inter, Montserrat and Bebas Neue; caption wording, placement, colour and animation through direction and revision requests. You can also request no captions. |
| You receive | An MP4 with captions rendered into the picture. Check spelling, line breaks, timing and mobile readability before publishing. |

## How to use it

- Upload the spoken footage and describe the full edit you want.
- Choose an available caption font or name it in the brief; specify placement and the parts of the picture to keep clear.
- Play the result with sound and check names and timing.
- In the existing edit, request exact corrections. Select an editable caption element when the preview offers one.

## Example instruction

Adapt this instruction to your footage and review the result.

Make a 30-second short from this product demonstration. Add speech captions in Montserrat with white text and a dark outline. Keep them above the lower interface area and away from the product. Spell the product name exactly as supplied. Keep complete spoken thoughts.

## What to check

Caption styling and timing changes are editing instructions. The review timeline is for preview and inspection; it is not a full manual subtitle-track editor.

Text already baked into an uploaded video is part of its pixels. It may not be separately selectable. Review the rendered captions after changes. The output described here is an MP4 with captions in the picture.

## Related workflows and examples

### All Shorty features

Select footage, build a story, match a reference, add captions and revise the cut. Shorty edits video for creators, brands and agencies from their own source material.

### Correct caption wording

Check captions against the source speech, then request the exact wording, timing, or placement change. Select the editable caption or title where that option is available. Review the new result for spelling and whether the text hides an important part of the picture.

### Review timing

Check whether each caption appears with the intended phrase and stays long enough to read.

### Keep captions clear of subjects

Choose placement from the subject’s entire movement, not one still frame.

### Download SRT and WebVTT captions

When a completed edit has saved caption timings, open Subtitles and download SRT or VTT. These files carry caption text and timing for the edited output, ready to inspect in your video player or publishing tool.

### Remove filler words like um and uh automatically

Use an editor that finds the fillers in the speech and cuts them for you. In Shorty, write “remove the ums and false starts” in your brief: the director cuts the hesitations, stutters and restarts and builds the rest of the edit, captions included, on the clean take. In Descript, CapCut or Premiere Pro, filler removal is its own step: transcribe, review the detected words, delete them, then keep editing.

## Questions, answered.

### Can I change caption placement and fonts?

Yes. Choose a supported font or name it in the brief, and describe the position, size and appearance. Use revision chat for further changes and select an editable caption element when available.

### Can I fix one incorrect caption by typing?

Yes. Give the exact current text and replacement, identify the moment, and say which other parts of the edit should stay. Review the updated render.

### Can I request a timing adjustment?

Yes. Identify the caption or moment and describe when it should appear or disappear. Check the new render against the speech.

Bring the footage. Tell us the idea. Shape the edit.
