# Reference video style matching

Shorty analyses a reference video and uses its shot structure, pacing, transitions, framing, text treatment and colour direction to edit your own footage.

## When to use it

For creators adapting a visual style to a new shoot, brands keeping a campaign consistent, and agencies translating a client reference into an editable first cut.

## Tell Shorty which parts of the reference matter

| Trait | Direction to provide | What to review |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shot structure | Identify the opening, demonstration and final reveal | The source material supports the requested sequence. |
| Pacing | Name quick passages and moments that need more time | The product or action remains understandable. |
| Transitions | Describe a particular transition or request clean cuts | The treatment works with your actual source shots. |
| Text | Supply exact titles, caption preferences and readable placement | Names, timing and line breaks are correct. |
| Colour | Describe the mood and colours that must remain accurate | The treatment does not misrepresent the product. |
| Audio | State what to preserve or exclude | Listen to the rendered file, not only the preview picture. |

## Inputs, decisions and output

| Part | Details |
| --- | --- |
| You provide | Your footage and an uploaded reference, a reference from Discovery, or written style direction. Uploaded references support MP4, MOV and WebM up to 256 MB. |
| Shorty handles | Reference analysis, selection of corresponding moments from your footage, an edit plan and a rendered interpretation of the requested treatment. |
| You control | Which traits matter: shot length, opening, transitions, colour, captions or pace. Add instructions for the source moments and product details that must stay. |
| You receive | A new MP4 using your source material, with the requested visual treatment applied where the footage supports it. |

## How to use it

- Add your source footage.
- Open References and upload a reference or choose one from Discovery.
- Name the traits you want and any exceptions, such as keeping your original dialogue.
- Render, compare the result with the reference and request focused revisions.

## Example instruction

Adapt this instruction to your footage and review the result.

Use the reference for short opening shots, a slower product reveal and warm colour. Edit only my product footage. Keep the label readable, use clean cuts and leave the final product shot on screen longer. Add no captions.

## What to check

A reference guides the edit; matching a camera move or scene still depends on what your footage contains.

Check sound separately from picture. State whether to retain source sound, use a supplied soundtrack or make a silent edit, and use audio you have permission to publish.

## How to evaluate a reference match

Keep reference, brief and output together. Compare opening, rhythm, text and ending; request one correction. The fragrance test demonstrates timing revision without a reference. Test reference accuracy on your own material.

## Related workflows and examples

### Edit your footage to match a reference video

Add your raw clips and the video you want to copy, write “like the reference”, and Shorty edits your footage to match it: where the captions sit and which words light up, how fast it cuts, cuts locked to the beat in music edits, transitions, framing and colour. Ask for a one-to-one recreation and Shorty rebuilds the reference’s opening and titles with your own clips. You get a finished MP4 and revise it by message.

### Compare reference-editing workflows

Shorty, InVideo, Sparki, Trendy, Vyra and Zera Studio use references to guide footage edits. Compare interpreted traits, revisions and controls after the first output.

### Inspect the first cut and a precise revision

A recorded Shorty browser test: six supplied fragrance clips became a 10-second vertical film. A follow-up request changed four shot lengths from 2.5 seconds each to 2, 2, 2 and 4 seconds.

### All Shorty features

Select footage, build a story, match a reference, add captions and revise the cut. Shorty edits video for creators, brands and agencies from their own source material.

### Reference editing instructions

Give Shorty a reference video and your own source clips, then describe which editing traits matter: pacing, shot order, captions, transitions or color. Shorty analyzes the reference and uses your footage to build a new MP4. The reference guides the edit; its visual frames are not substituted for your footage.

### Save and reuse your own visual style

Create your own saved Shorty style from up to 10 reference images or videos. Reuse it for new edits in the same account or workspace, alongside the brief and source footage for each video.

### Keep product packaging, labels and colours accurate

Edit the footage you filmed instead of generating new product shots, write the details that must stay true into the brief, and check the exported video against the real product. Shorty assembles your own clips and photos, so the pack on screen comes from your footage; its crops, captions, colour treatment and timing are what you review. Generative video tools create new frames, so inspect every generated shot for changed label text, shape and colour.

## Questions, answered.

### Can I use Shorty without a reference?

Yes. A written brief can provide the story, style and output direction.

### Can I match only the pacing?

Yes. Say which reference traits to apply and which to leave out. Review the resulting cut and refine the timing if needed.

### Can I use a timestamp to explain the treatment?

Give a timestamp and desired trait, such as a quick opening then slow reveal. Inspect the result; direction does not guarantee frame-identical reconstruction.

### Can I keep the reference picture style but use different audio?

Name the dialogue/soundtrack to preserve and exclude reference music if intended. Verify the exported audio.
