# Download subtitles as SRT or WebVTT

When a completed edit has saved caption timings, open Subtitles and download SRT or VTT. These files carry caption text and timing for the edited output, ready to inspect in your video player or publishing tool.

## Export the captions

- Open the completed video in Edits.
- Look for Subtitles alongside the finished-video controls. It appears when saved caption timing data is available.
- Choose Download SRT or Download VTT.
- Load the file with the matching MP4 in your player or destination platform and check the first caption, a middle passage and the ending.

## Choose a file format

| Format | Use | What it contains |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SRT | A destination that asks for SubRip subtitles | Numbered text cues with start and end timestamps. |
| WebVTT | A web player or destination that accepts VTT | A WEBVTT header and timed text cues. |

## Use the file with the matching version

Caption times refer to the edited output, not the original recording. Re-export after a revision changes speech, scene timing or wording. Keep the MP4 and subtitle file together under a version name in your delivery folder.

## What is and is not exported

The file uses stored caption words, including authored caption wording when it is part of the saved caption program. It is not a verbatim transcript of every source recording. Styling, animated entrances, fonts, colours and word highlighting remain in the rendered video and are not reproduced by a plain subtitle file.

## If Subtitles is absent

Some older or custom edits do not contain usable caption timing metadata. Shorty does not guess a transcript from title cards or automatically transcribe the MP4 through this control. Request a captioned edit and inspect it, or prepare a timed file in your transcription workflow.

## Check for duplicate captions

If captions are already visible in the MP4, enabling a separate subtitle track may show two sets of text. Decide whether your destination needs the burned-in version, a clean video with a separate track, or both as separate deliverables.

## Keep the ideas coming

### Caption editing

Shorty can add speech captions while assembling the video. Specify a font and visual treatment, then request wording, position or timing changes in the revision chat.

### Correct caption wording

Check captions against the source speech, then request the exact wording, timing, or placement change. Select the editable caption or title where that option is available. Review the new result for spelling and whether the text hides an important part of the picture.

### Share a cut and collect timed feedback

Open a completed Shorty edit, choose Share for review and create a link for that version. Reviewers can watch and leave comments at a video time without a Shorty account. Links expire after 30 days and can be revoked.

## Questions, answered.

### Does downloading subtitles use editing credits?

This download formats the caption timings already saved with the edit. It does not start a new analysis or render.

### Can I download subtitles for every older video?

Only edits with usable saved caption timing data expose this download. A visible title or text overlay alone is not enough.
