The Shorty team · Updated 24 September 2026 ## Find an answer that survives on its own A speaker says, “That changed everything.” Inside a forty-minute conversation, you know what “that” means. In a standalone clip, the viewer does not. Start far enough back to establish the subject, or choose a different passage. Look for a claim followed by an example, a problem followed by a decision, or a question followed by a useful answer. Keep important qualifications. Removing “in our small pilot” may make a result sound more impressive, but it also changes the claim. ## Build around the selected passage A highlight tool or transcript workflow can help locate candidate passages. Once you have chosen the words, decide what the pictures should add. A product close-up can explain a feature. A shot of the team working can show the process. Another angle of the speaker can simply make a cut feel less abrupt. Supply the selected passage and relevant supporting footage to Shorty with a clear brief. Treat that as a directed assembly, not a promise that any long recording will become a perfect set of clips. Make sure the source selection contains the idea you want to keep. ## Check the ending before you decorate it Does the clip finish after the point lands, or stop because the timer ran out? Leave enough room for the last sentence. Avoid adding a sales line that makes an interviewee appear to endorse something they did not endorse. Review captions against the audio, especially names, numbers, and technical terms. Then play the piece without the surrounding interview. If a new viewer needs a paragraph of context, the clip still needs work. A slightly longer, understandable answer usually serves the viewer better than a shorter puzzle. ## A brief to adapt to your footage Example direction. Replace the subject, shots, and wording with your own. Build a vertical clip around this selected interview answer. Keep the qualification about the pilot. The social edit does not need to eat tomorrow. A faster social handoff starts with a small, deliberate selection from the shoot.
